Set Host Print Transform Option on AS/400

Host Print Transform drives a printer not as an "EMULATED" printer but as the printer it actually is. The host handles all data conversion and sends all the native commands to the printer and our device only provides the connection to the host; not the command drivers. Using this method, nothing is lost in the translation and many common problems of emulation are taken care of. The disadvantages are that you do not have any local control of the printer and the AS/400 tends to over compensate and print some jobs with a very small font.  Your printer must also be on the list of supported printers.

We will use PRT01 and an HP LASER JET II as the example printers for this procedure. Start at a command line and enter the following commands:

1. ENDWTR WTR(PRT01) OPTION(*IMMED) - to end the print writer.
2. VRYCFG CFGOBJ(PRT01) CFGTYPE(*DEV) STATUS(*OFF)
3. CHGDEVPRT DEVD(PRT01) TRANSFORM(*YES) MFRTYPMDL(*HPII) - see list below.
4. VRYCFG CFGOBJ(PRT01) CFGTYPE(*DEV) STATUS(*ON)
5. STRPRTWTR DEV(PRT01)- start printer writer.
6. Send test jobs to printer to make sure it works properly for your application.
